Update on Jeremy Payton

Jeremy Payton

With his twin brother, Bryan, having committed to UCLA a couple of weeks ago, Covina South Hills defensive back Jeremy Payton is considering his own options, which could very well also include the Bruins...

While his brother committed to UCLA two weeks ago, Covina (Calif.) South Hills defensive back Jeremy Payton, 6-1, 180, is getting his fair share of attention, and already has one offer in his back pocket, while still waiting on a few others.

"I have an offer from Oregon State right now, and they are in my top three with Colorado and UCLA," Payton said. Payton is also hearing from Arizona, Arizona State, Oregon, Fresno State, Boise State and San Jose State.

Even though his brother Bryan received quite a bit of the early attention, Jeremy is a pretty solid prospect in his own right, having a strong junior year in which he tallied 34 tackles, 8 interceptions (1 for a TD), 3 fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.

With UCLA having offered just Bryan at this point, Jeremy, though, has a good attitude about it. He said, "I am seriously considering UCLA. Colorado is probably my other favorite right now. UCLA, Oregon State and Colorado. Colorado is recruiting me as a receiver, while everyone else is pretty much recruiting me as a corner."

Payton attended UCLA's Junior Day, and came away impressed with Coach Dorrell. "I really like Coach Dorrell. He is a straightforward and honest man. I loved the campus and the staff there. Coach Bieniemy is the one recruiting me. I know he played at Colorado so he doesn't badmouth them, even though they're recruiting me, too."

Payton performed well at the Nike Camp, recording one of the top four shuttle times (4.09) while also running a 4.5 forty and jumping 28 inches. "I think I matched up well with the top receivers there. It was a good camp."

With brother Bryan all set for UCLA, and another friend, Daniel Drayton, committed, Jeremy likes the idea of a group going to UCLA. "Bryan's going there, Daniel is going there and I know Brigham (Harwell, Los Altos DE) is looking hard at them and really likes them. So yeah, it would be cool if we could all go there together. But I want to look at all my options. My mom wants me to go to UCLA, my dad is open-minded, they just want me to make the best decision for me."
