Leach not aware of any player backlash

WASHINGTON STATE COACH Mike Leach reiterated that accountability begins with him and his assistants during Tuesday's teleconference. He discussed that, the balance between criticizing – and lifting – a team that has an 11-47 record the last five seasons and an emerging wide receiver.

"First and foremost, I called out myself and other coaches," Leach said. "I don't know why that gets ignored."

He also was asked if his postgame candor results in any backlash from players.

"We weren't aware of any," Leach said. "We didn't have good effort and that starts with the coaches.

"We didn't have great effort. It's got to be addressed if you don't."

Leach said Monday that he had not spoken with standout wide receiver Marquess Wilson, who walked out of Sunday's workout and reportedly cleared out his locker. That has not changed.

"I haven't talked with him," Leach said. "He's certainly suspended for this week."

He again declined to discuss whether Wilson, who leads the Cougars in receiving yards (813), receptions (52) and touchdowns (five), will return this season.

"That's between him and me," Leach said.

Wilson was replaced in the starting lineup the last two weeks by redshirt freshman Dominique Williams. He 243 yards and a touchdown on 16 receptions.

"I think he's played well and played hard," said Leach, when asked by CF.C about Williams' emergence.
