Embiid to meet with schools before decision

Joel Embiid

Joel Embiid will announce his college decision next week, but prior to doing so he plans to cut two schools from his list, plus meet with at least three of the five teams in contention.

With the early signing period just a week away, Joel Embiid, a four-star recruit out of Gainesville (Fla.) The Rock School, is getting close to making his college choice.

Prior to his decision, Embiid still has a visit and a few meetings left.

According to Justin Harden, Embiid's high school coach at The Rock School, Embiid is going to stop by Florida Wednesday to meet with Billy Donovan.

"He's going to go over and meet with Coach Donovan after practice," Harden told Scout.com. "That's the convenience for them recruiting in their background."

"There's no guarantees though," Harden quickly added. "He's not a Gator or Gainesville guy. As easy as they have it for convenience sake for being able to watch practice and him being able to go to practice, I think they have just as much as pressure to land a kid in their backyard."

Embiid, a 7-foot, 220-pound center, will also have Texas swing by his school on Wednesday. Kansas is expected to stop by The Rock School on Thursday.

"I don't know if Virginia or Marquette plan to [come by]," Harden said. "I don't know if they are going to rush in today or tomorrow. They haven't made that decision."

According to Harden, Embiid is currently considering Florida, Texas, Kansas, Virginia and Marquette. He's taken visits to all five schools.

"Those are the five that he's committed to choosing between," Harden said. "There were a lot of other schools that came in after he had trimmed the list down to five, but he kind of made it a point to say that once he got it to five that would be it."

"It's down to those five schools and he has a great choice ahead of him," he added. "Wherever he goes he'll have a good career because he's so talented."

Prior to slicing his list all the way to one, Embiid is going to cut a pair of schools.

"He's trying to trim his list down to three schools because he hasn't officially done that with any of the other schools," Harden added. "It looks like he's going to try and trim it to three and down to one next week."

The current plan is for Embiid to announce his college choice next week at a signing press conference.

"He's close," Harden said about Embiid's impending decision. "It's not like he's going to make any decision this week. Next week we are having a signing ceremony. He'll know by then."

"It's next Thursday the 15th," he said of the press conference. "He will definitely do it then."

Embiid is regarded as the No. 15 center in the 2013 recruiting class.
