Massington Talks About ASU Visit

The Sun Devils are very much in the mix with Alabama and UCLA for the four-star receiver, Eldridge Massington, following his official visit to Tempe this weekend...

"I didn't think I'd end up loving it like I did," said Eldridge Massington over the phone, as he awaited his departing flight from Phoenix. "It wasn't even the place, really- it was how they'd use me here, how I'd fit in."

The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder enjoyed the hours spent with Arizona State offensive coordinator Mike Norvell dissecting film.

"I like their new system and how they use big receivers more. They'd move me around everywhere- in the slot, give me a lot of one-on-ones; they want to use me on the outside, the inside. They like to throw the ball deep, so it'd allow me to be a downfield threat.

"Coach said I'd be 'the' big receiver. He said, 'I could use you.' And when he broke it down every which way, I was thinking, 'Yeah, I like that.' … I'd have some good guys around me, too. Their running back's cold; their quarterback's good, too."

Another thing Massington not only likes, but "loves", about ASU is the fact that they never stopped recruiting him.

"They've been with me since day one. They never stopped showing me love. Even when I was committed to USC, even when I got hurt, they recruited me even harder. That's big to me."

Massington has several connections at ASU and in the Phoenix area, as well -- one being redshirt sophomore defensive back Lloyd Carrington, a transfer from Pittsburgh, originally out of Dallas Lincoln.

"Lloyd was one of the first DBs I went against. He killed me," laughed Massington. "He humbled me real quick. I know if I went to ASU, Lloyd would push me. He works harder than anyone. Going against him in one-on-ones every day would only make me better. Plus, I got Mike Adams out there, too. I know Mike would coach me up, too."

[Arizona Cardinals cornerback Mike Adams is a close friend and former Louisiana-Lafayette teammate of West Mesquite DBs coach Kyle Ward, and has helped train Massington, Sun Devil corner commit William Earley, and several other West Mesquite prospects.]

Speaking of NFL-ers, Massington was able to watch one of his favorites over the weekend.

"We got to see a Lions practice. They were practicing at ASU's bubble. I walked in on Calvin Johnson and was like, 'go-lly!'" he laughed. "That dude's a monster."

All in all, having visited Alabama, UCLA and ASU, Massington admitted Alabama takes the cake on lifestyle.

"It's all about football there. That's it. I'm not about the flashiness, the city, the nightlife, I'm not interested in all that, I'm tryin' to ball. I'm tryin' to win, and get myself ready for the League."

"A lot of people say I'd get lost in the mix at Alabama because they got so many receivers. They say I wouldn't be 'the guy' there, but people don't really understand my mindset. I think I'd be the guy wherever I go."

"Schools talk about helping me get to the League and all that. I got to get myself to the League. I'm the one who has to put in the work, so I can really get to the League from anywhere. I'm just trying to find a place where I'll be more polished for the League."

That said, "If I had to decide today, I wouldn't know where to go. I got to go home and figure that out," sighed Massington. "I got 'til Wednesday."
