UCLA has informed Ben Howland that he’s been fired, according to sources.
Bruin Report Online reported in December that UCLA was leaning toward letting go Howland, and we’ve learned that the UCLA administration never wavered from that stance.
Howland, of course, just finished his 10th season as UCLA’s head coach. He led the Bruins to three Final Fours, but the program has struggled in the last five years, both on and off the court.
We have heard that donors and boosters are currently being enlisted to cover the approximately $2.3 million, or one season’s salary, it will take to buy out Howland from his contract.
According to sources, UCLA is also prepared to pay over $3 million per year, which could potentially make the UCLA head coach among the five highest paid coaches in college basketball.
Here's more of our take on the situation.
