John Houston (6'3/218) is a 5-Star linebacker prospect from perennially loaded Serra High School in Gardena, Calif., a school that produced the likes of Robert Woods, Marqise Lee, and Adoree Jackson among others.
While the aforementioned players brought flash to the field in the form of speed and skill, Houston brings a bit more lumber to the defense pushing 220 pounds and playing linebacker.
Houston lines up in the middle for Serra as well as outside linebacker, and with all of the speed around him, he generally is placed in a read and react situation. He reads and reacts exceptionally well as he led the Cavaliers in tackles as a junior.
Houston has the frame and skill set to play either inside or outside on the next level. His long frame and coverage skills are perfect for the outside, and his instincts and smarts make him ideal to play inside. He'll need to bulk up considerably before taking on the rigors of inside linebacker, but he has the frame to easily hold 250 pounds.
Houston is not a flashy player who is going to blow up a highlight reel blitzing the quarterback. He's a sideline to sideline middle linebacker who is excellent dropping back into coverage as well as holding the line of scrimmage.
Houston is being recruited by the likes of Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington.
