Football Recruiting Notes

Stephen Johnson

Two recruits could pop fairly soon for UCLA, while defensive line recruiting continues to shake out in the wake of the Lineman Camp on Sunday...

-- Breland Brandt was one of the very few legitimate UCLA prospects at the Elite Skills Camp Monday, and he showed in about an hour of working out why he's one of the top 15 recruits in the country in 2016. Several defensive coaches, including Jeff Ulbrich and Angus McClure, were showing Brandt a good deal of love during the event. We've heard that UCLA is in a very good spot for Brandt, and that it's mostly a matter of time before he commits to the Bruins.

-- The other prospect in attendance at the event was Mykel Jones, the 2016 Louisiana receiver. He showed up about halfway through the camp and only ran a few routes, but was impressive, showing good explosion and deep speed. He's right around his listed 6'0, and we've heard that UCLA could offer. Eric Yarber was talking to Jones and his dad during the event.

-- In other recruiting notes, we've heard that UCLA is in a good spot for Stephen Johnson, the San Leandro athlete, and some sources have indicated that there's a chance he could commit very soon. UCLA could use him on either side of the ball, so his commitment wouldn't necessarily preclude UCLA picking up another speedy slot-type receiver. Johnson may camp with UCLA on Wednesday.

T.J. Simmons.
-- As Amy Campbell reported today, Florida running back T.J. Simmons is visiting this week, and there's word from sources (and Simmons himself) that he could opt to commit on the visit or soon thereafter. UCLA is in the mix for several running back prospects, and could even be the leader for the No. 2 running back Sotonye Jamabo. With Bolu Olorunfunmi already committed, it's going to be interesting to see how the recruiting class shakes out in the backfield.

-- With Fred Ulu-Perry, we've heard that UCLA may hold off offering him as an offensive lineman for now, but that there's actually a chance they could take a look at him as an interior defensive lineman after the way he competed during the camp yesterday. He showed good tenacity during the Battle of the Bruins drill, and actually flashed a few defensive line moves. It'll be interesting to see if he's receptive to a defensive line pitch.

-- At this time, it looks undecided whether UCLA will offer DeShawn Fortune, from what we've heard. While he showed well during the camp yesterday, we've heard from some sources around him that there's some concern about academics, and his technique still needs polishing. It seems at this point that he might be more of a second tier option for the Bruins after the coaches get a chance to see his senior film.

-- Kyon Clark, the brother of Kenny Clark, showed well at the camp yesterday, as we reported, and, though he's carrying far too much weight, showed a great deal of work ethic throughout the day, repeatedly sprinting through drills. While we'd doubt that he earns an offer soon, we could see him as another option UCLA could pivot to later in the year. From what we've heard, though, a greyshirt situation is unlikely.

-- From what we've heard, Roquan Smith had an excellent visit to UCLA, to the point where some sources have indicated that the Bruins could be in the driver's seat. Florida and Georgia will be tough to beat for the middle linebacker, but Ulbrich and company have done a very good job recruiting Smith.

-- We continue to hear that UCLA is in a good spot for both Keisean Lucier-South and Osa Masina.
