McGrew Still High on UCLA

Sean McGrew

2016 four-star Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco running back Sean McGrew was one of the top performers at the Huntington Beach 7-on-7 this past weekend...

Sean McGrew established himself last season as one of the premier backs in the region. Earlier in the season, you couldn't mention McGrew without mentioning his size. By the time the playoffs rolled around, the talk of his size was barely an issue because of his dynamic speed, explosiveness through the hole and ability to make multiple defenders miss.

This past weekend, McGrew showed another side to his game. He has very good hands out of the backfield and made several outstanding catches and is a load to deal with in space. Here was our recap of McGrew's performance following the tournament:

"McGrew can definitely play at the next level. He showed off incredible hands out of the backfield and that's big for how he projects. Even though he can run 10.6 and has some wiggle to him, he's still not likely going to be an every down back. Get him in space out of the backfield and he'll be a very dangerous player. He also has the ability to run the football between the tackles and showed multiple times against high level competition last season that he can take a hit and gain yards after contact."

McGrew spent most of the spring running track and finished 7th at the CA State Finals with a 10.68 time, fastest among all sophomores.

"It's funny early in the year, I was just hoping to run a 10.9," McGrew said. "My first meet, I ran a 10.99 and I was just excited because I beat Shay (Fields). Then a few weeks later I went 10.7 and then went 10.6. I was hoping to go 10.5 at the state finals but couldn't get there. It was still a great season for me and I'm very happy with how it went down.

"Now I'm back in the weight room and trying to gain some weight. I only did light lifting during track season and then took some time off to recover. I'm weighing 170 right now and I want to gain a few more pounds because I always lose about five during fall camp."

On the recruiting front, McGrew has a couple of schools in mind for unofficial visits during the season.

"I want to go up to Washington for a game and to California for a game," McGrew said. "I'm also going to try and go to every UCLA home game that I can as well. USC has reached out a little more recently and wants me to come up and visit but I haven't scheduled anything yet.

"My plan is to play out my season next year and then after track is over, I'll probably make my decision at that time. I have a good idea what I want to do but I want to go through the process a little and then do something in the spring."
