Catching Up With Andre James

Andre James

2015 four-star Herriman (Utah) offensive tackle Andre James talks about the players he's trying to convince to join him in Westwood and more...

Andre James came back from The Opening ready to play football. Wednesday morning, James looked to be in mid season form in a scrimmage against Utah powerhouse, Bingham High School and Lehi High School. James was primarily playing right tackle during the scrimmage and looked sharp. He was getting to the second level on almost every run play and outside of a bad rep or two, he was a stone wall in pass protection.

James had some interesting things to say about recruiting some other guys to UCLA, his thoughts on his upcoming season, as well as the Bruins season, and improving his game between now and college.

Q: You're on board with UCLA. Is there anyone else you are looking to push in the Bruins direction, or are you mostly focusing on your upcoming season?

A: I'm definitely looking to help get some guys to come with me. The obvious ones are Osa Masina and Porter Gustin. I know Osa pretty well, and that is one I'll be working on until he commits. I just got to meet Porter recently, but I am going to try to bring a few Utah guys with me. Fred Ulu-Perry was somebody I talked to a lot at The Opening. Now, I'm not going to steal credit from the coaches, but truth be told, I was the closer on Fred. All he heard from me at The Opening was about the Bruins and what we could do together out there. Also, Dru Samia was another guy that I talked with. He is really high on UCLA. He is a good guy and I'd love to play with him. I think there could be some really special stuff happening with the class of 2015.

Q: What are you expectations for Herriman this upcoming season and personally what are some of your goals?

A: I think we have a chance to contend for a championship. We just played Bingham really tough and I think we will only get better. Our offensive and defensive lines may be the best in Utah. I really pride myself on leading these guys and I have a lot of good friends that I've been playing with for a while now. We have great chemistry on this team. My personal goals are to lead this team to as many wins as I can. As a linemen, I wouldn't mind getting a lot of pancakes each game either, but that kind of goes without saying.

Q: How do you think UCLA will do this fall? Are you planning to watch their games this year?

A: I think they are legit contenders to win it all. There is a lot of talent being lead by a great QB. I can't wait to watch them. I don't think I'll miss a game all year. Maybe I'll take my visit during the season and catch a game.

Q: What do you need to work on between now and your freshman year at UCLA?

A: Everything. I need to work on everything. The obvious answer is put on size, but I need to improve everywhere before I am ready to play in the Pac-12.
