VIDEO: Tuioti-Mariner on Not Redshirting

Jacob Tuioti-Mariner

AUG. 24 -- Freshman defensive end Jacob Tuioti-Mariner talks about the adjustments he's made to college and how he feels about not redshirting...

Jacob Tuioti-Mariner:

On camping winding down:
I'm feeling pretty good. It was pretty challenging coming in as a freshman, but I was grateful to have really good coaches to help my development as a player and the coaches were really good about that.

On hearing he likely won't redshirt:
It's nice to hear it, but it's not a situation for me. Personally, I'm trying to get better as a player and I'm trying to get better and learn from the older guys and that's been helpful because they've been there.

On the biggest adjustments:
Everything was different, because last year, I was in a 4-3 defense and coming in to a 3-4 defense has been challenging but thanks to the coaches, it's been really helpful.

On if he preferred to redshirt:
I didn't come in with the mindset having to worry about if I'd redshirt, it was to see if I can contribute and get better as a player.

On playing some outside linebacker:
I was pretty sure they just wanted to see where I'm at and what kind of player I am and see what we are capable of doing.

On dropping into coverage:
I really liked it, it was pretty fun. That was my first time really dropping in to coverage. Anything to contribute to the team, I was up for.

On his focus:
I was trying to focus on being that b-gap player and containing my gaps. Just to be in the interior side of the feel.

On his size:
I am 6-3 and 259. I want to be more muscle.

On if his game has taken a stride:
Yeah, definitely my pass-rush and thanks to Coach Tui and Coach Angus, they've been focusing on every aspect, they have seemed to focus on my pass rush and I've been working at it and gettting better at what I do.
