VIDEO: Hundley on Starting Season

Brett Hundley

AUG 26 -- Quarterback Brett Hundley talked about tuning out the hype and focusing on Virginia...

Brett Hundley answered questions after practice.

On if he ever wants to get rid of the no-contact jersey:
A little bit. We were over there simulating getting hit, how to fall. Probably tomorrow, I'll have some linebackers over there. You get acclimated real quick to contact. It's natural, been doing it all your life. I may have some linebackers to come over and do some hitting.

On if he considers himself a veteran slider now:
You can say that. I still play my game. I know how to slide, so if I need it, I'll use it.

On if he's more capable of avoiding the rush:
Yep, as a quarterback you grow and mature. Sacks fall on the quarterback and the o-line and communcation. Once you understand defenses and know where the weaknesses are, you can anticipate better.

On if he ran too much in 2013:
No not at all. Its rare to have UCLA, or anywhere really, to have your quarterback as your leading rusher. When people were injured and I had to take matters to run the ball, I have to do what I can to help this team.

On if it falls on him to make sure people are handling expectations:
I'm apart of all of us working. I'm one of the team leaders. It's me, it's Eric Kendricks, it's everybody. I think we've done a good job. There are always expectations. But as the captain of the team, me and the other captains, we have to make sure we manage expectations.

On what he's seen from Virginia:
Big defense, fast and physical. It will be fun to play them and I can't wait until Saturday.

On if there are certain things he's got a better understanding of that he learned:
It's all in the growing process of being a quarterback and the offensive line. It comes with experience, you learn from them and get better.

On Virginia's secondary:
They're a big secondary, great players and we can't wait for Saturday.

On the expectations for himself:
It's just another college football season, trying to get to the championship and making the playoffs, but it's about understanding the process to get there. And that's taking it one game at a time. Focus on what you have in front of you.

On embracing expectations:
I don't care about them. As a team, we have our own expectations, so anything anyone else says, when people think we're great, we know what we want to do and that's all that matters. Just another man's expectations. What matters is what we do as a team.

On Devin Lucien:
Devin is always Devin. He's a fun guy, fun to be around but he's a phenomenal playmaker for us, he's very smart, he'll run his routes crisp, get open and make big plays for us. Devin will always be Devin. I like his new do, a different style, but a change up.

On going into his third season:
I feel a lot calmer. It's just a football game. Your freshman year, you feel antsy and butterflies, playing a college football game, last year a little bit. Now I'm more comfortable and understand what it will be like. You understand what's to come and what you're prepared for. I don't have any butterflies really but I'm sure on gameday I will.

On Eldridge Massington:
I'm staying on top of him, making sure he's perfect in every thing and not only Eldridge, but everyone on offnese. We try to be perfect in all aspects but if we can stop something on the field, we'll call it out.

On the tempo of the offense:
We always start fast, that's what our offense is built for, but the game is four quarters. We'll have fun. We want to get off to a fast start and that's what we'll try to do.
