It didn’t have the number of bigtime national names that it has had in the past, but the 10th annual Ventura County Football Coaches Association combine had some solid 2005 recruits in attendance, including a couple of UCLA targets.
With past attendees like Ben Olson, Tyler Ebell, Mike Seidman, Lorenzo Booker, Whitney Lewis, Terrail Lambert, Ronney Jenkins and Keary Colbert, the VCFCA has carved out a nice niche in Ventura County.
This year the star of the combine was Oxnard (Calif.) Rio Mesa defensive back Kevin Thomas, who has continued his monstrous spring where he excelled at the MSL Combine in Long Beach and the San Diego Nike Camp.
Wednesday, at the event hosted at his own school, Thomas again stole the show, recording the top 40 time, top shuttle time and second best vertical leap.
Thomas ran a 4.35 in the forty, good enough for 9th fastest in combine history, a 4.0 in the shuttle, third fastest in combine history, and jumped 38.1, moving him past Booker and Ebell to third all time.
A pair of UCLA targets also participated, with Oak Park (Calif.) receiver Gavin Ketchum and Westlake (Calif.) Oaks Christian defensive back Mark Richardson also showing up.
Ketchum ran a 4.6 in the forty, a 4.32 in the shuttle, jumped 29 times and benched 15 times the 185-weight. Ketchum has an offer from UCLA, as well as Oregon and Boston College.
Probably the second best prospect there was Ventura (Calif.) St. Bonaventure running back Matt Lee (4.35 forty (t-1st), 4.10 shuttle, (2nd), 34.3 vertical (4th)).
A trio of St. Bonaventure players also did well, including offensive linemen Dominic Sonsini (28 reps), safety Cory Finnerty and defensive lineman Carlton Gillespie. Ventura (Calif.) High linebacker Jon Peckham (30 reps, second best all-time) and Malibu (Calif.) High athlete Thomas Oden, an intriguing player who, at 6-4 and 275, is very quick and athletic, though he is new to football.
UCLA defensive line coach Don Johnson was in attendance, along with six other Pac-10 schools.
