The wide receiver prospect from Moreno Valley (Calif.) Valley View, 6-4, 205-pound Dominique Johnson, committed to UCLA when they offered him on Junior Day...

UCLA it seems has always had a big, rangy wide receiver in their offense. For the past few years, Tab Perry has been that guy. Now it’s Joe Cowan. Inheriting that mantle in the next couple of years will be a new prospect who recently made a verbal commitment to UCLA.

Moreno Valley (Calif.) Valley View receiver Dominique Johnson (6-4, 205) had aimed to become a Bruin since he began playing football. When the UCLA coaching staff offered him a scholarship at Junior Day earlier this month, Johnson didn’t even hesitate.

“I knew that’s where I wanted to go. Ever since I started playing football, UCLA was where I wanted to go. When they offered me, I didn’t waste any time,” said Johnson. “Academically and athletically, UCLA is the best option for me.”

It wasn’t the first time Johnson had been on the UCLA campus; he had attended a basketball camp in Pauley Pavilion, but it was his first time getting a thorough tour of the school. “It was real nice. It was a big campus. I really like it,” said Johnson.

One of the main attractions to UCLA for Johnson was the Bruin coaching staff. He said, “I was very impressed with the whole coaching staff. They are all great people. Coach Babers (Johnson’s recruiter) is a great guy and his players have had success. Coach Dorrell, he is a former receiver there and has a lot of pride.”

Johnson was also hearing from Colorado, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State, Washington State, Oregon and Notre Dame.

As a junior, Johnson had 40 receptions for 600 yards and 10 touchdowns, but is aiming for 1,000 yards and 50-60 receptions for his senior season.

On the camp circuit, Johnson is undecided about the Nike Camp in Los Angeles, but will be attending the Adidas Elite camp this summer.

Committing nearly a year before Signing Day, Johnson said he won’t be spending the next year looking at other schools. “I’m 100% committed to UCLA. I don’t think anything can break that,” said Johnson.

Johnson has already achieved an NCAA qualifying test score.
