On Monday, UCLA received their fourth commitment for 2006 when Lancaster (Calif.) Paraclete offensive linemen Jake Dean (6-4, 260) gave his verbal to the Bruin staff when he took an unofficial trip to Westwood.
"It went really well. They offered me last Tuesday. I called Coach Svoboda, and he offered me and we talked for a while. I wanted to go down there and talk with the coaches. I spent about two hours talking to Coach Cable and then I talked to Coach Dorrell and I told them I was committing," said Dean. "They were all pretty excited."
Dean plays offensive tackle for Paraclete, but the plan for him when he arrives at UCLA is for a redshirt season, then he'll move inside to center.
"I've never played center in a game, but I've played guard so I can play inside. There's no big difference, just now I'll have to snap," said Dean. "The coaches want me to put on about 40 pounds by the time I'm ready to play, but not by eating. They want it to be muscle."
"I wanted to go somewhere that was close to my family, so they could come see me play. I've always watched UCLA play, and always wanted to go there, so to have that opportunity is pretty cool for me. My family is really happy with the decision," said Dean.
Dean had attended Spring Practice at UCLA, and said one of the primary attractions to the Bruins was the coaching of Cable.
"He was what really made my decision easy. I really like his coaching style. He's a good guy. He's not just a coach, but he wants a family feeling with his linemen."
Dean also said the facilities at UCLA were appealing to him.
"The new Sports Complex is great. I've been down there for a field trip before, but I got to really see the facilities and they are really nice."
When the Nike Camp in Los Angeles happens next month, Dean will be one of the participants, and will also attend both the 1-Day camp for linemen at UCLA and the 4-Day camp during the Summer.
One thing Dean is looking forward to this fall is attending his first Bruin home game.
"I got to play in the Rose Bowl for youth football, but I've never gotten to see a UCLA game there. I'm going to go to every one I can this fall," said Dean.
Academically, he carries a 3.0 GPA and will take his SAT on May 7th.
