With linebacker Allen Bradford and defensive back Shareece Wright getting most of the recruiting publicity, Smith is quietly hearing from a number of schools and recently received his first scholarship offer.
"Boise State offered me and Nevada is real close," Smith said. "I'm hearing a lot from Washington, Fresno State, UTEP and UCLA too. USC and Arizona send me some stuff but I haven't heard as much from them."
Smith said that the Bruins and Broncos headed his list, but a UCLA offer could be a difference maker. "If UCLA offered, I wouldn't even think about it. I'd take it," said Smith.
However, he did say that he needs to get some academics cleared up before the Bruins offer. Smith said, "I made some mistakes my first couple of years, but I'm getting my grades up. I'm going to work really hard in summer school so I can get qualified. I've gotten all As and Bs this semester."
Smith was at the Los Angeles Scout.com Combine and clocked a 4.6 forty (which was fast for the day), a 20-yard shuttle time of 4.12 (the second quickest of the day) and jumped 33 inches. He also attended the Adidas Combine at UCLA.
One thing that Smith said he would love to be able to do in college is continue to be teammates with Bradford and Wright. "We talk about it. It would be real cool, but we'll see how it works out," Smith said.
During his junior season, Smith recorded 48 tackles, took an interception back for a touchdown while catching 15 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns.
