"I committed to UCLA today," said Carter. "I talked to Coach (DeWayne) Walker first, than I called Coach (Chuck) Bullough and then I called Coach (Karl) Dorrell. They were all really excited."
Carter, the #16 strongside linebacker in the class of 2008 nationally, is the 19th player to commit to UCLA in this class, and the 10th on defense, and he's the third linebacker UCLA has received a verbal from.
"One of the reasons I committed is because of the class we'll have coming," said Carter. "Our class right now is stacked for 2008. I'd love the chance to play with E.J. Woods, Kemonte Bateman, all the City (Section) guys. A lot of the people they've got are on defense. Patrick Larimore, he's a baller. And I talk to Damien Holmes on MySpace. He didn't try to get me to commit, but he's was talking about UCLA. We've got a real good linebacker corps coming in."
"That was my top school and I though why wait and lose a scholarship," said Carter. "It's solid to UCLA. I may want to still take some trips but I'm going to UCLA."
UCLA is also after his teammate and close friend Milton Knox, and he talked about the possibility of them playing together in college.
"Milton has to do what's best for him," said Carter. "But I think he'll make the right choice."
"Me and Mychal are already talking to each other about that," said Carter.
Carter said his family was thrilled to know that he'd be spending his college years just a few miles down the 405.
"My dad, he was just excited I got a scholarship. But it's a pretty short drive," said Carter. "I mean, it's close to home. I won't be at home all the time, but I could go home whenever I want and not have to fly."
And with his decision out of the way, Carter said he can focus on something other than his recruitment.
"I'm relieved, it took a little off my back," said Carter. "Now I can focus on summer school, and our season and winning another City championship.
Carter earned all-combine honors last month at the Scout.com Combine in April in Los Angeles. Last fall, Carter led the defense with130 tackles and 5.5 sacks plus an interception and earned all-City Section honors after helping Birmingham to the 2006 City Section title.
Academically, Carter has a 2.8 GPA and achieved a qualifying test score, but plans to take it again for his own satisfaction.
