UCLA enjoyed one of its
best overall recruiting years in this decade, signing numerous consensus #1
national recruits and several #1 rated California recruits in their
sports.
Some of the key names include: the #1 rowing recruit in the nation
in 6-4, 210-pound Elise Wilson from San Francisco, who was the key rower on the
USA National Junior Team that won the silver medal last summer; Andrea Remynse,
who in tennis has been ranked #1 nationally in the 18's division and could
play #1 immediately for the Bruins; Phillip Francis, who has been called in some
golf circles "the next Tiger Woods" in dominating the junior circuit like no
player since Tiger; Kelly Easterday, a first team All-American in water polo who
led her HS to three straight CIF Championships; Lauren Barnes, Kylie Wright and
Sarah Salazar, all Parade All-Americans in women's soccer.
The recruiting class for
women's soccer was just named the #1 class in the nation by Soccer Buzz
Magazine. The recruiting class for women's basketball has been rated in the top
ten in the major recruiting surveys. Men's track/cross country signed a
school record 14 recruits. Softball landed several #1s at their
positions in the West.

MITCHELL BEACOM-LHP, 6-8,
215, University City HS in San Diego, CA…Beacom has twice earned San Diego
Union-Tribune All-Academic honors. The San Diego southpaw missed a portion of
his sophomore season and all of his junior year with a foot injury. Beacom
recorded a 1.00 ERA and a 1-2 record as a sophomore and posted a .351 batting
average as a freshman. At the Area Code camp in December 2005, he earned most
valuable player accolades as a pitcher. He competed on the Orange County Braves
scout team. Besides baseball, Beacom is a three-year water polo letter winner as
the team's goalkeeper. An all-league first-team selection, Beacom established
the school record for career blocks and earned defensive most valuable player
honors three times. Beacom's parents, Luann and John, both attended UCLA, and
Luann competed for the UCLA swimming team.

Canyon HS in Encinitas, CA…He 2006 American Junior Golf Assn. All-American…He
currently is ranked 34th among U.S. junior players on the GolfWeek poll through
Nov. 7. On the AJGA circuit this season, he recorded three Top 10 finishes in
seven starts, plus two other Top 20 finishes. In October, he tied for fourth at
the PING Invitational with scores of 75-71-70--216. In the current AJGA
rankings, Driscoll is ranked 27th. In his last 20 junior tournaments, Driscoll
recorded 18 Top 20 finishes, including 10 in the Top 5. He won the FCWT Teal
Bend Classic in January with scores of 75-73-69--217 (+1). He was the runner-up
in the 2006 California State Junior Amateur with scores of 72-68-73--213 (-3)
and qualified for the 2005 U.S. Junior Amateur at Longmeadow CC.
PHILLIP FRANCIS, Laurel
Springs Home School and lives in Scottsdale, AZ…The nation's top-ranked junior
golfer, Francis, 18, has won three of junior golf's four "major" tournaments
this season: The Thunderbird International, The Rolex Tournament of Champions
and the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. He was named the 2006 AJGA Rolex
Junior Player of the Year in October…The winner of 29 tournaments since 1997,
Francis is the consensus No.1 ranked player in junior golf. He is a four-time
winner (1999-2002) of the U.S. Junior World Championship, breaking a record held
by Tiger Woods. In addition, Francis is a three-time AJGA 1st Team All-American.
He has won five AJGA tournaments this season, including the Heather Farr
Championship in which he was 19-under par with teammate Esther Choe, the AJGA's
top-ranked female junior player.
WOMEN'S
GOLF:
JOO YOUNG (GLORY) YANG,
Linfield Christian HS and lives in Murrieta, CA..She is one of the nation's top
girls junior golfers…Ranked 15th by GolfWeek among U.S. junior girls, is
considered one of the top junior players in the class of 2007. She earned
All-America honors last month from the American Junior Golf Assn..Yang finished
second at the prestigious PING Invitational in October. In July, she won the
Fidelity Investments Junior at Trump National. Since February, she has finished
in the Top 20 in 12 of 13 AJGA tournaments with nine Top 10 finishes.
MARIA URIBE, Collegio Pan Americano in Bucaramanga, Colombia…She is one
of junior golf's top players in the world…Uribe, 16, was ranked 13th nationally
this week among U.S. junior golfers by GolfWeek and was named an American Junior
Golf Assn. All-American last month. Uribe tied for fifth at the Rolex Girls
Junior Championship in June. At the U.S. Girls Junior Championship in July, she
placed second in stroke play with scores of 70-70--140 (-4). In match play, she
advanced to the round of 16. At the 2006 U.S. Women's Amateur Publinks
Championship, she placed 11th in stroke play with scores of 69-75--144 (E). In
match play, she advanced to the quarterfinals before falling 3 and 2 to UCLA's
Tiffany Joh, the eventual champion. The future Bruin golfer also played in the
2006 U.S. Women's Open, where she tied for 81st with scores of 76-76-152 (+10).
GYMNASTICS:
MARCI BERNHOLTZ, Thornhill
Secondary School, Unionville, Ontario, Canada…She trains at ASF Gymnastics in
Richmond Hill, Ontario…competed at the 2006 World Championships and was an
alternate at the 2004 Olympics after finishing sixth at the Olympic Trials. In
2005, she narrowly missed medaling at the American Cup, finishing fourth on
floor exercise, and at the Canadian National Championships, she finished third
in the all-around and on floor exercise. Bernholtz earned a bronze medal on
vault at the 2004 Massilia Cup in France and on floor exercise at the 2004
Canadian National Championships.
ELYSE HOPFNER-HIBBS, Northview Hts.
Secondary School, Toronto, Ontario, Canada…A 2006 World Championship medalist
with a bronze on the balance beam, Hopfner-Hibbs is a three-time Canadian
National Champion…She won the 2006 all-around and floor exercise event…She will
defer her UCLA enrollment to after the 2008 Olympic Games in China where she is
a strong candidate to qualify as a representative of Canada…
MIZUKI SATO,
Bella Vista HS in Fair Oaks, CA…She is an honors student and a Level 10 gymnast
at Technique Gymnastics. She is a three-time Junior Olympic National qualifier
(2004-2006) and two-time team champion. At the 2006 Level 10 National
Championships, she placed seventh in the all-around and fourth on floor
exercise. At the Regional Championships in 2006, she placed third in the
all-around and on floor exercise, and at the 2005 Level 10 Nationals, she had an
eighth-place showing on balance beam.
ALLISON TAYLOR, Spring Creek
Academy and lives in Dallas, Texas…She trains at the famed World Olympic
Gymnastics Academy (WOGA) and attends Spring Creek Academy, earned a Top 20
all-around finish at the 2003 USA Championships as an elite. In 2005, she
competed at the U.S. Classic, and won the uneven bars competition and placed
third in the all-around at the Metroplex Challenge. She was also second on vault
and third on bars at the 2005 WOGA
Classic.

JESSICA CHERRY, Campolindo
HS in Moraga HS..Rowed for Oakland Strokes, which is one of the most prominent
programs in the nation.
CAROLINE CURSON, Torrey
Pines HS in San Diego, CA…San Diego Rowing Club..Member of the SD Rowing Club
since eighth grade...as a freshman, was a member of the SDRC lightweight four
that captured the silver medal at the USRowing National Youth Championships...as
a sophomore and junior, Curson rowed in the SDRC varsity quad...in 2005 that
crew captured the USRowing Southwest Junior Regional Championship and a
fourth-place finish at the USRowing nationals...in 2006, SDRC placed second in
the regional championships and eighth at nationals...Curson's father, Phil,
rowed at King's College School in London...her older brother rowed for SDRC and

two high school students on a collegiate research team that competed in the MIT
International Genetically Engineered Machines Competition; their project, which
won a first-place award, centered on genetically engineered RNA and DNA in E.

Club...during the 2006 racing year, she rowed in the five seat of the MJRC girls
eight that won the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic District Championship; that crew
passed up their invitation to the USRowing National Youth Championships to

coached by UCLA rowing alumna Beth Anderson...competed in the top Oakland novice

Atherton HS in Menlo, CA..Stanford Junior Crew…Competed on the Menlo Atherton HS
cross-country and track teams as a freshman and sophomore... concentrated her
track efforts on the 100-, 200- and 400-meters...helped the track program to
consecutive league titles...began rowing for the Stanford Junior Crew program
near the end of her first year in high school....has showed great improvement

both singles and doubles (w/Jamie Hampton) at the Easter Bowl in Palm Springs,
Calif. She reached the finals of the 18s division at the USTA National
Hardcourts as a 16-year old back in 2004. She has been ranked in the top-30 of
the ITF Junior World Rankings, competing in such events as the U.S. Open, French
Open, Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl junior tennis championships. Remynse, who has
recently limited her junior schedule to play a number of professional events as
