Head Coach Rick Neuheisel talked about the first practice of game week Monday, and about an injury to the wrist of a player who definitely would need to be able to use it, while a freshman wide receiver has a particularly good day...

After a day off, the team practice Monday in shoulder pads, helmets and shorts.

Micah Kia, the starting offensive tackle who broke his hand last week, displayed his wrapped cast Monday and it definitely was club-size. Kia did conditioning, but didn't take reps in the scrimmages. Head Coach Rick Neuheisel talks on video about it (the link to the video interview is below).

Gavin Ketchum was on the practice field but didn't practice, still recovering from mononucleosis.

Terrence Austin injured his wrist in a no-hit drill late in practice but Neuheisel said the x-rays were negative. He returned to the field with ice wrapped on the injury but didn't take any more reps.

Freshman wide receiver Jerry Johnson and running back Johnathan Franklin look destined to be redshirted since they're on the scout team. Freshman running back Milton Knox isn't on the scout team -- at least yet.

Interestingly, defensive lineman Andy Keane is working as a scout team offensive lineman.

In the one-on-one, receiver v. DB drills, the cornerbacks generally provided very good coverage. Michael Norris had a particularly good day, and Alterraun Verner turned in his typically good performance. After Courtney Viney, who is the #3 cornerback, it appears that walk-on Chris Meadows is ahead of freshman cornerback Aaron Hester.

Wide receiver Taylor Embree, who was still in a red, no-hit jersey, had a very good day. He made a one-handed catch in the corner of the endzone, and then later tipped a throw over the defensive back's head to catch it.

With Kia out, Brandon Bennett was working at left offensive tackle with the starting offensive line.

If you previously didn't have problems with Windows Media Player, you'll probably find the first option is better quality.
