Broomfield (Colo.) Legacy kicker Kip Smith switches commitment from Minnesota to UCLA, hoping to continue the Bruins' tradition of outstanding kickers...

One of the premier kickers in the country, Broomfield (Colo.) Legacy's Kip Smith, has changed his mind, and instead of kicking in the Big Ten, Smith will do so in the Pac-10.

A longtime commit to Minnesota, Smith took an official visit to UCLA this weekend, and ended up switching his commitment from the Gophers to the Bruins.

"He is officially committed to the Bruins," said Chris Sailer, his kicking coach.

Smith, who's highlights this year include a 67-yard field goal, is ranked 10th nationally by Scout.com but #2 nationally by ChrisSailerKicking.com.

"Kip is an outstanding kicker," said Sailer, a former UCLA kicker himself. "He has perhaps the strongest leg in the nation. He's big on kickoffs. He also shows the ability to punt at the highest level."

Sailer would know a thing or two about excellent two-way kickers, having been an All-American at UCLA in 1997 as both a kicker and a punter.

Smith is the latest elite kicker to commit to the Bruins, and he'll be the heir to the premier kicker in the country, Kai Forbath, who himself followed All-American Justin Medlock. UCLA's also boasts Bjorn Merten and John Lee as All-American kickers in the past 25 years.

The three-star also had offers from Arizona State, Colorado and Kansas State.
